Event #9: $1,000 No-Limit Hold'em of the 2014 World Series of Poker began with 1,940 players, but after two full days of play, just 12 remain in contention for the gold bracelet and $323,125 first-place prize. The man best positioned to make a run at the prize is Frank Patti, who finished is the chip leader with 1.197 million.

Patti was short stacked toward the end of the evening, but then he managed to spike a set with pocket fives against Vinny Pahuja’s queens for a double, and then not long after he turned quads to win a massive pot against Chris Hunichen.

Day 2 of the tournament saw 161 players return to action, but after ten one-hour levels of player, all 149 of them would hit the rail. Fortunately they were already in the money when play resumed, so no one had to leave empty handed.

Christian Harder was the first to go when he got all in with the {8-Spades}{8-Diamonds} against an opponent's {Q-Diamonds}{Q-Spades}. The board ran out a clean {k-Clubs}{6-Diamonds}{5-Spades}{k-Diamonds}{10-Hearts} and Harder hit the rail in 161st place, good for $2,147.

Before long the pro had company on the rail including Huy Nguyen (159th - $2,147); Shannon Shorr (145th - $2,147); recent bracelet winner Kyle Cartwright (125th - $2,374), who won a $1,000 buy-in no-limit hold'em event a few days ago for his first bracelet; reigning WSOP National Champion Dominik Nitsche; WSOP Circuit all-time ring winner Alek Masek (80th - $3,387); reigning World Poker Tour champ Keven Stammen (79th - $3,387); and WSOP bracelet winner Mark Radoja (59th - $4,539).

Radoja fell in Level 15 (1,200/2,400/400) when he, Rick Fitzgerald, and a player on the button were all in preflop. The button player had Radoja and Fitzgerald at risk, while Fitzgerald had Radoja covered.

Fitzgerald: {a-Diamonds}{a-Hearts}
Radoja: {8-Spades}{8-Hearts}
Button: {a-Clubs}{k-Diamonds}

Fitzgerald was in front with pocket rockets, and he stayed there after the board ran out {k-Clubs}{9-Clubs}{j-Spades}{6-Spades}{q-Diamonds}.

The night continued for four more levels, and during that time the eliminations continued to mount. Among those to fall during this time were Amnon Filippi (51st - $5,360), Faraz Jaka (47th - $5,360), Randal Flowers (40th - $6,390), Steve Gross (35th - $7,717), Owen Crowe (30th - $7,717), the last woman standing Debbie Kim (24th - $9,428), and Day 1 chip leader Adam Geyer (20th - $9,428).

While many fell, a select few managed to navigate the Day 2 minefield including Jorge Vergara (1,159,000), David Inselberg (458,000), Chris Hunichen (404,000), Vinny Pahuja (341,000), Dylan Linde (311,000), and Brad Libson (232,000).

Day 3 will kick off at 1 p.m. local time on Tuesday, and the final 12 players will play down to a champion. The PokerNews Live Reporting will be on hand to capture all the action and eliminations, so be sure to join us then. In the meantime, check our this video where we ask if Brandon Cantu is the most underrated player in poker.

Rene Angelil

Rene Angelil was down to his last three big blinds and got into the big blind for the penultimate hand of the day. John Fontana raised to 35,000 and Jorge Vergara called on the button, Angelil tossed in his remaining chips.

Both players checked down the {J-Hearts}{4-Spades}{9-Spades}{10-Hearts}{9-Clubs} board and Montana then bet 20,000 on the river. Vergara called but mucked when shown {A-Spades}{9-Hearts} from Montana, Angelil was eliminated with {J-Diamonds}{4-Diamonds}.

Huge Pot Goes Towards Patti

• Ниво 21: 6,000-12,000, 2,000 ante

We didn't catch the action until the river of a {9-Spades}{10-Hearts}{9-Clubs}{9-Diamonds}{J-Spades} board because on the other table was just an all in showdown. However, we did see Frank Patti bet 60,000 and Chris Hunichen raised to 178,000. Patti clicked it back to 460,000 and after brief consideration, BigHuni made the call.

Patti turned over {9-Hearts}{7-Clubs} for quads and Hunichen mucked.

Haugo vs Angelil

• Ниво 21: 6,000-12,000, 2,000 ante

Chris Haugo moved all in for 144,000 from the hijack and Rene Angelil called from the button, the blinds got out of the way.

Haugo: {8-Diamonds}{8-Clubs}
Angelil: {K-Diamonds}{Q-Hearts}

The {4-Hearts}{4-Clubs}{J-Spades}{9-Clubs}{3-Spades} board left Angelil with just above three big blinds.

Patti Sets Up Pahuja

[user153638] • Ниво 21: 6,000-12,000, 2,000 ante

Vinny Pahuja opened for 27,000 from the hijack and received a call from David Inselberg in the cutoff. The button folded, and then Frank Patti announced that he was all in from the small blind for 309,000. Pahuja moved all in over the top and that drove Inselberg from the hand.

Pahuja: {q-Diamonds}{q-Spades}
Patti: {5-Hearts}{5-Clubs}

It looked as if Patti had picked the wrong time to shove, but he found new life when the {5-Spades}{j-Clubs}{k-Spades} flop delivered him a set. Neither the {6-Hearts} turn nor {K-Clubs} river helped Pahuja, and he was left shaking his head as he sent about half his stack over to Patti.

Simeon Naydenov Eliminated in 14th Place ($14,579)

Simeon Naydenov

From early position, Simeon Naydenov moved all in for exactly ten big blinds, 120,000 chips, and Dylan Linde one seat over on the button reshoved all in. The blinds got out of the way and Naydenov showed {A-Hearts}{5-Hearts} but he was dominated by {A-Spades}{10-Spades}. The {10-Diamonds}{9-Diamonds}{5-Diamonds}{10-Clubs}{A-Hearts} board gave Linde a full house and Naydenov a trip to the payout desk.

Nuts for Both

• Ниво 21: 6,000-12,000, 2,000 ante

Chris Hunichen raised from under the gun and called the three-bet of Frank Patti on the button to 55,000. On the {Q-Clubs}{8-Hearts}{A-Hearts} flop, both players checked. Hunichen then bet 41,000 on the {K-Clubs} turn and fired again for 111,000 on the {10-Clubs} river. Patti moved all in and was called by {Q-Hearts}{J-Hearts}. Patti showed {A-Clubs}{J-Diamonds} and they chopped the pot. "The {10-Hearts} on the river would have been nice," Hunichen added.
